Overhead Crane Concept Sketches

In the storyboard, the world hoppers spot a crane that looks like it can be used to pick up the control rods and move them into the core! Looking around the room, they spot three different control interfaces which, with some experimentation, provide control over the crane’s x, y, and z motion.

Concept Sketch 1

The crane looks similar to overhead cranes that one of the world hoppers worked with in an operations job at Caterpillar. From his experience, he know that the overall depth of the crane is adjusted by moving the full bridge girder forward and back, while the lateral movement of the crane is adjusted by moving the trolley back and forth along the bridge girder.

Concept Sketch 2

Finally, the world hoppers have to find a way to raise and lower the crane hook. The pull a lever which runs an electric motor inside the trolley, which spools and unspools the cable attached to the crane hook. The world hoppers have all the tools they need to pick up and move the control rods!
